On June 23, 2021, the Houston City council voted to increase water and wastewater rates for all Houston municipal water customers by roughly 13%, beginning on September 1, 2021. And, these rates for both residential and industrial customers will continue to have annual increases every year through 2025. The expected total increase amount will grow to an average of 78%. The City Council approved this cost increase to help offset the cost of improvements to the city’s water and sewer infrastructure needed to comply with a federal consent decree negotiated in 2019.
